II. Synthesis and Electrical Measurements Free-standing polyacetylene films (thickness "" 30llm) were synthesized using the Zeigler-Natta catalyst technique, initially developed by Shirakawa and colleagues [3], with important modifications introduced by Naarmann [4]. The catalyst (tetrabutoxytitanium ancj triethylaluminum suspended in silicone oil) [5] was stirred for two hours at 120 0 C, followed by stirring and degassing (pumping) while cooling slowly to room temperature. The polymerization reaction was carried out at room temperature (rather than using [3] toluene with polymerization at _78 0 C) in a controlled atmosphere drybox.
